Job Description

Court runs, drafting and client consultations: a legal aid office in Mthatha will put you to work from week one. If you turn up on time and finish what you start, you'll fit in quickly.

The site is in Mthatha; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying.

The work, day to day

  • Study for the LPC competency-based examinations alongside the work
  • Prepare trial bundles and discovery affidavits
  • Appear in the magistrate's court on postponements and unopposed matters
  • Draft letters of demand, summonses and particulars of claim
  • Take instructions from clients and write clear attendance notes

Must-haves

  • Willing to work late before trials and filing deadlines
  • Good legal research and clear written English
  • Clear criminal record, as required for admission
  • LLB degree from a South African university
  • Proficient in Word, Outlook and legal research databases

Helpful, not essential

  • Vacation work at a law firm
  • Second official language used by the firm's clients
