Job Description

A labour law practice in Stellenbosch has space for a law graduate ready to start practical vocational training. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

You'll be based at a labour law practice in Stellenbosch. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

What your day looks like

  • Study for the LPC competency-based examinations alongside the work
  • Prepare trial bundles and discovery affidavits
  • Issue and serve documents at the magistrate's court and High Court
  • Draft letters of demand, summonses and particulars of claim
  • Research case law and legislation on SAFLII and Juta or LexisNexis
  • Record your time on the practice management system every day

Must-haves

  • Code B driver's licence and a reliable car for court runs
  • Clear criminal record, as required for admission
  • Proficient in Word, Outlook and legal research databases
  • Ready to sign a practical vocational training contract registered with the LPC

Extra points for

  • Vacation work at a law firm
  • Completed PLT (Practical Legal Training) at a law school

What you get

  • Paid PLT course fees at some firms
  • Travel allowance for court runs
  • Study leave for board exams

Applying, step by step

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in Stellenbosch really suit you before you apply.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: recent police clearance certificate plus LLB degree certificate and full academic record.
  3. Send your details with the form below. Add one or two lines about similar work you've done.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 7 working days, usually by phone.

How2Apply recruits for this position on behalf of hiring employers around Stellenbosch; applications go into our talent pool and shortlisted candidates are introduced directly.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

How to stand out

  • Say which area of law you want and why in two lines; generic cover letters rarely get shortlisted.
  • Put your LLB, university and graduation year at the top, and your average mark if it's above 65%.
