Job Description

You'll cut, fit and weld steel to drawing in a busy petrochemical shutdown contractor in Ballito. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

This post is in Ballito (KwaZulu-Natal). Please only apply if you can travel there daily. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

The work, day to day

  • Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment
  • Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing
  • Roll and form plate for tanks, chutes and hoppers
  • Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill
  • Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
  • Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns

Must-haves

  • Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
  • Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses
  • Medical fitness certificate for industrial sites, or willing to get one
  • You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help

What's in it for you

  • Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
  • Coding renewals paid by the employer
  • Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
  • Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied

Applying, step by step

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in Ballito really suit you before you apply.
  2. Have the following on hand (clear photos on your phone are fine at first): trade test certificate or SAIW qualification, current welder coding certificates (check the dates) plus photos of recent work, if you have them.
  3. Fill in the short form below with your name and a phone number you actually answer.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 9 working days, usually by phone.

Your application joins the How2Apply talent pool for this role, and we put shortlisted people forward to employers hiring in and around Ballito.

Applying is free. Nobody from How2Apply will ever ask you to pay for anything to get this job.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Expired codings are the number one reason welders are turned away at the gate. Check dates before you apply.
  • Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
