Job Description

The structural steel fabrication workshop in Soweto needs a coded welder who can hold a WPS and deliver clean, sound joints. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

This post is Soweto-based, with most of your time spent at a structural steel fabrication workshop. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

What you'll actually do

  • Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
  • Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
  • Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
  • Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
  • Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool

What you need

  • Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
  • At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
  • You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
  • Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
  • Medical fitness certificate for industrial sites, or willing to get one

Nice if you have

  • SAIW welding inspector course, even at Level 1
  • Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
  • Rigging or crane signalling certificate

On offer

  • Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
  • Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
  • Coding renewals paid by the employer

Applying, step by step

  1. Read the "What you need" list above. If you tick most of it, go ahead and apply.
  2. Have the following on hand (clear photos on your phone are fine at first): your ID document or smart ID card copy, current welder coding certificates (check the dates) plus trade test certificate or SAIW qualification.
  3. Fill in the short form below with your name and a phone number you actually answer.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 8 working days.

Your application joins the How2Apply talent pool for this role, and we put shortlisted people forward to employers hiring in and around Soweto.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Expired codings are the number one reason welders are turned away at the gate. Check dates before you apply.
  • List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
