Construction General Worker (Building Site)

You'll mix, carry, dig and clean up so the tradespeople on a school building project in Harrismith can keep building. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

This post is Harrismith-based, with most of your time spent at a school building project. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Carry bricks, blocks and cement bags to where the bricklayers work
• Help offload deliveries of steel, timber and pipes
• Set up barriers, cones and signs around open trenches
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Clean tools, mixers and wheelbarrows at the end of each day
• Mix concrete and mortar by hand or with a small mixer

• Prepared to travel between sites in the area
• You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• A clean record is preferred for some government sites

• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Paid weekly or fortnightly
• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site

• List past sites by name and what you did there, like "mixed concrete, laid kerbs". It proves you have done real site work.
• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
