Job Description

You'll give hands-on nursing care at a physical rehabilitation hospital in Newcastle, working alongside registered nurses. Good for someone who wants to build a solid track record they can put on their CV.

You'll report in Newcastle. Relocation is not covered for this one. Overtime comes up in peak season and is paid.

The work, day to day

  • Do simple wound dressings and report anything that looks infected
  • Hand out oral medication under the supervision of a registered nurse
  • Help patients bath, dress, eat and use the toilet with dignity
  • Spot confusion, falls risk or changes in mood and tell the nurse in charge
  • Turn bed-bound patients on schedule and check pressure areas for early sores
  • Keep the fluid and food intake charts accurate for every patient
  • Follow infection control rules, including hand hygiene and safe sharps disposal

What you need

  • Able to work shifts, including nights and weekends
  • First aid Level 1 or BLS certificate
  • Patient and gentle with elderly, frail or confused people
  • Accredited home-based care or ancillary health care certificate for caregiver posts
  • Matric or NQF Level 4 equivalent
  • At least 1 year of hands-on patient care

Helpful, not essential

  • Dementia care or palliative care short course
  • Experience in a frail care or hospice setting
  • Code B or Code 8 driver's licence for home visits
