Grader Operator (Road Construction)

Real machine hours on real projects, with the road construction contractor working in and around Midrand. If you like clear targets and knowing where you stand, this is for you.

The site is in Midrand; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

• Compact layers with the roller until density tests pass
• Cut and trim road layers to level with the grader
• Dig trenches for pipes and cables to the depth and grade set by the surveyor
• Watch for underground services and follow the banksman's signals
• Do the pre-start checklist on your machine before the first bucket
• Record machine hours and fuel on the daily plant sheet
• Park the machine on level ground and lock it when you knock off

• Can read grade pegs and understand cut and fill
• Valid Code 10 licence for moving machines on public roads
• Operator certificate for the machine class, from an accredited training provider
• Good depth perception and no history of machine accidents
• At least 2 years operating the machine on construction sites
• Willing to work on projects outside your home town

• Basic plant maintenance or mechanical knowledge
• PrDP for tipper or lowbed work
• Certificates on more than one machine type

• Camp accommodation or a living-out allowance on remote sites
• Refresher training on new machines
• Overtime paid on all hours past 45 a week

• You will likely do a practical test on the machine. Do the walk-around check out loud. It shows you work safely.
• List each machine with its size, for example "20-ton excavator, 4 years". Plant managers match you to the machine they need.
