In-House Legal Advisor (Financial Services)

A financial services company legal department in Newcastle needs an attorney who can draft, advise and stand up in court. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

The work is in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Advise clients on risk, settlement and next steps in plain language
• Draft and review contracts, shareholder agreements and legal opinions
• Manage a portfolio of litigation or advisory matters on your own
• Negotiate settlements and draft settlement agreements
• Brief counsel and prepare them for trial and opposed motions
• Supervise and train candidate attorneys and paralegals

• Sound judgement under deadline pressure
• Enrolled with the Legal Practice Council and holding a current Fidelity Fund certificate if you handle trust money
• At least 2 years of post-admission experience in the relevant field
• Able to manage client relationships without a senior in the room
• LLB and admission as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa

• Experience on bank or insurer panels
• LLM or postgraduate certificate in your specialist area

• Clear path to directorship at some firms

• Give a short matter list with outcomes, stripped of client names, to prove your experience.
