Job Description

Blend in, watch closely and act lawfully: that is loss prevention at a supermarket in Umhlanga. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

You'll be based at a supermarket in Umhlanga. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

What you'll actually do

  • Search staff bags at exit points according to store policy
  • Record every incident with photos, times and value of goods
  • Tag high-value stock and check security tags at the doors
  • Walk the floor in plain clothes and watch for shoplifting behaviour
  • Detain suspects lawfully and call SAPS, then write a statement
  • Help with stock counts and point out loss hot-spots
  • Check receiving bay deliveries against invoices and seal numbers

You'll need

  • Available for retail hours including month-end weekends
  • Able to handle confrontation calmly
  • Knowledge of lawful arrest and search under the Criminal Procedure Act
  • Discreet, observant and honest

Helpful, not essential

  • Previous store detective experience with case outcomes
  • Retail loss prevention course
  • Experience giving evidence in court

What you get

  • Retail trading hours, no night shift in most stores
  • Plain clothes work (no uniform in detective roles)
  • Monthly recovery incentives

How to apply

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in Umhlanga really suit you before you apply.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: loss prevention or investigation course certificates, matric certificate plus PSIRA certificate and ID copy.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 7 working days.

How2Apply recruits for this position on behalf of hiring employers around Umhlanga; applications go into our talent pool and shortlisted candidates are introduced directly.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Give numbers on your CV: how many cases you opened, how many led to arrests. Retail security managers trust results.
  • Keep your appearance low-key for the interview. Detectives need to blend in with shoppers.
