Maintenance Fitter (Food Factory)

You'll keep machines turning and parts in spec at the plastics injection moulding factory in East London. Expect to be trusted with real work from your first week.

The work is in East London, Eastern Cape, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Machine shafts, bushes and keyways on a lathe and milling machine
• Maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems on production lines
• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
• Build and repair press tools, jigs and moulds
• Follow the lockout procedure before any work on machinery

• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker
• Willing to work shifts, standby and weekend shutdowns
• You read engineering drawings and measure with micrometers and verniers
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• N2 or N3 engineering subjects

• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma

• Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
• Expect a practical test. Measure twice and work cleanly, because the assessor watches your habits as much as the result.
