Maintenance Fitter (Food Factory)

Bearings, gearboxes, pumps and lathes: this beverage bottling plant in Umhlanga needs your hands on them. Expect to be trusted with real work from your first week.

This post is in Umhlanga (KwaZulu-Natal). Please only apply if you can travel there daily. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Program and run CNC machines from engineering drawings
• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Align shafts with a laser alignment tool after every drive change
• Machine shafts, bushes and keyways on a lathe and milling machine
• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
• Help with electrical fault-finding on motors and sensors as a millwright

• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker
• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan in a factory or workshop
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• N2 or N3 engineering subjects

• Food safety awareness for food and drink plants
• Hydraulic and pneumatic courses
• Forklift licence for moving heavy parts

• Shift and standby allowances
• Tool allowance
• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma

• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
• Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
