Mechanical Fitter (Shutdowns)

Bearings, gearboxes, pumps and lathes: this sugar mill in Isando needs your hands on them. Expect to be trusted with real work from your first week.

The work is in Isando, Gauteng, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. Start is planned for the beginning of next month.

• Build and repair press tools, jigs and moulds
• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
• Respond to breakdowns and get the line running again safely
• Maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems on production lines
• Follow the lockout procedure before any work on machinery

• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• Willing to work shifts, standby and weekend shutdowns

• Millwright trade test, since it covers both mechanical and electrical
• Hydraulic and pneumatic courses

• Shift and standby allowances
• Tool allowance
• Paid overtime on shutdowns
• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma

• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
• Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
