Motor Mechanic (Independent Workshop)

You'll service, diagnose and repair cars in a busy independent service workshop in Midrand. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

This post is Midrand-based, with most of your time spent at an independent service workshop. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Coach the apprentice on your bay through basic services
• Diagnose engine, ABS and airbag faults with an OBD-II diagnostic scanner
• Road test vehicles before and after repairs
• Write clear job card notes on what you found and what you fixed
• Keep your bay, tools and special service tools clean and counted
• Quote extra work you find and pass it to the service advisor for approval
• Update control unit software when the manufacturer releases a campaign

• Neat with customer vehicles: seat covers, floor mats and no grease marks
• Your own basic toolbox
• Confident with diagnostic scan tools and wiring diagrams
• Motor mechanic trade test certificate (Red Seal) or occupational certificate at NQF 4
• At least 3 years as a qualified mechanic in a dealership or workshop
• Code 08 licence so you can road test cars

• High-voltage hybrid or EV safety training
• Automatic gearbox or DSG repair experience

• Productivity bonus on sold hours above target
• Tool allowance or tool insurance
• Manufacturer training courses paid by the dealer
• Pay at or above the motor industry bargaining council rates

• Attach manufacturer training certificates. They can move you up a technician grade and pay band.
• Do not leave gaps unexplained. Say if you were working for yourself or doing mobile repairs.
