Paving Team Labourer

You'll mix, carry, dig and clean up so the tradespeople on a shopping centre renovation in Randburg can keep building. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

Location: Randburg, Gauteng. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Carry bricks, blocks and cement bags to where the bricklayers work
• Clear rubble and load it into skips
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Sign the daily safety talk register before work starts
• Cut and lay paving bricks along string lines
• Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed

• Prepared to travel between sites in the area
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• A clean record is preferred for some government sites
• You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30

• Registered on your ward or municipal job-seeker database
• A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket
• Living near the site (many projects hire local labour)

• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Paid weekly or fortnightly

• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
• List past sites by name and what you did there, like "mixed concrete, laid kerbs". It proves you have done real site work.
