Pipe Welder (Carbon Steel & Stainless) – Permanent

You'll cut, fit and weld steel to drawing in a busy petrochemical shutdown contractor in Sandton. Expect to be trusted with real work from your first week.

You'll be based at a petrochemical shutdown contractor in Sandton. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

• TIG weld stainless steel tanks and fittings with proper back-purging
• Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
• Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
• Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
• Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool
• Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill
• Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment

• Medical fitness certificate for industrial sites, or willing to get one
• Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
• You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
• Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses

• Duplex or chrome-moly welding experience
• Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
• Orbital or automatic welding experience

• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
• Coding renewals paid by the employer

• List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
• Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
