Job Description

You'll mix, carry, dig and clean up so the tradespeople on a school building project in Bellville can keep building. If you turn up on time and finish what you start, you'll fit in quickly.

Location: Bellville, Western Cape. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. You'll start with a short induction before working on your own.

What your day looks like

  • Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
  • Sign the daily safety talk register before work starts
  • Clear rubble and load it into skips
  • Erect and strip shutters and simple scaffolding under supervision
  • Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed
  • Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks

You'll need

  • A clean record is preferred for some government sites
  • Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
  • Grade 8 or higher
  • Willing to start early, often at 06:30
  • You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
  • Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan

Helpful, not essential

  • A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket
  • Some experience with a jackhammer, grinder or plate compactor
  • Living near the site (many projects hire local labour)

What you get

  • Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site
  • Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
  • Paid weekly or fortnightly

Applying, step by step

  1. Check you meet the must-haves first; recruiters filter on those before anything else.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: certified ID copy and proof of address in the area, any safety or scaffolding certificates plus reference letter or phone number from a past foreman.
  3. Send your details with the form below. Add one or two lines about similar work you've done.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 6 working days.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Government-funded projects often reserve jobs for people from the local ward. Bring proof of address and ask the site office about the local labour desk.
  • If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
