Plumber's Helper (Residential)

Hard outdoor work on a school building project in Midrand, with a chance to learn a trade while you earn. If you like clear targets and knowing where you stand, this is for you.

You'll be based at a school building project in Midrand. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Clean tools, mixers and wheelbarrows at the end of each day
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks
• Cut and lay paving bricks along string lines
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Mix concrete and mortar by hand or with a small mixer
• Erect and strip shutters and simple scaffolding under supervision

• A clean record is preferred for some government sites
• Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
• Grade 8 or higher

• Some experience with a jackhammer, grinder or plate compactor
• A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket

• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site
• Paid weekly or fortnightly

• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
• Government-funded projects often reserve jobs for people from the local ward. Bring proof of address and ask the site office about the local labour desk.
