Post-Operative Caregiver (Private Home)

A hospice in-patient unit in Sasolburg needs someone kind and reliable to look after patients who can't manage alone. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

The site is in Sasolburg; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

• Follow infection control rules, including hand hygiene and safe sharps disposal
• Hand out oral medication under the supervision of a registered nurse
• Turn bed-bound patients on schedule and check pressure areas for early sores
• Keep the fluid and food intake charts accurate for every patient
• Make beds, change linen and keep the rooms clean and uncluttered
• Help patients bath, dress, eat and use the toilet with dignity
• Keep families updated on routine matters and pass clinical questions to the sister

• Accredited home-based care or ancillary health care certificate for caregiver posts
• At least 1 year of hands-on patient care
• Patient and gentle with elderly, frail or confused people
• First aid Level 1 or BLS certificate
• Able to work shifts, including nights and weekends

• Dementia care or palliative care short course
• A second South African language spoken by the patients you'll serve
• Experience in a frail care or hospice setting

• Overtime paid at time and a half
• Paid training in dementia and end-of-life care
• Transport home after late shifts at some facilities

• Recruiters phone references for care jobs, so warn your references and check their numbers still work.
• If you're a caregiver, attach the certificate from the training provider, not just a letter saying you attended.
