Rigger (Shaft & Headgear)

This coal mine engineering workshop near Mahikeng needs a trade-tested artisan who is safe, quick and thorough on breakdowns. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

The site is in Mahikeng; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Take part in weekend shutdowns for major overhauls
• Guide and teach an artisan assistant on the job
• Maintain pumps, fans and compressors in shafts and on surface
• Isolate and lock out machines under the site isolation procedure
• Repair and align conveyor belt drives, pulleys and idlers
• Fault-find hydraulic, electrical and engine faults on trackless machines

• Certificate of fitness for underground or surface work
• N3 certificate or Grade 12 with maths and science
• Willing to do standby and call-outs on a roster
• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan, preferably on a mine
• Trade test certificate in your trade (diesel mechanic, fitter, electrician, boilermaker, instrumentation or rigger)

• Study assistance for engineering qualifications
• Tool allowance or company-issued toolbox
• Artisan allowance on top of basic pay

• Mention underground or flameproof experience clearly. It separates mine-ready artisans from factory artisans.
• Your trade test certificate must show the trade and the date. Keep a certified copy ready because mines verify it.
