Safety and Risk Officer (Coal Mining)

Plan inspections, lead investigations and build a safer shift culture at the mining contractor on a platinum lease near Secunda. You'll work with a small crew, so being easy to work with matters as much as skill.

This post is in Secunda (Mpumalanga). Please only apply if you can travel there daily.

• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Track safety statistics like LTIFR and report them each month
• Help run emergency drills and check refuge bays
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards
• Train safety representatives and support the health and safety committee
• Lead incident investigations using a root cause method

• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings

• Retirement fund and medical aid
• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• CPD and further study funded

• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
• Give numbers: how many investigations you led, or how the LTIFR changed in your section.
