Safety Officer (Open Pit Operations)

Zero harm needs people who go into the workings. This open-pit coal mine near Sandton needs you. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

You'll be based at an open-pit coal mine in Sandton. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Lead incident investigations using a root cause method
• Track safety statistics like LTIFR and report them each month
• Help run emergency drills and check refuge bays
• Train safety representatives and support the health and safety committee
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards

• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it

• ISO 45001 auditing experience
• Diploma or degree in Safety Management or Environmental Health
• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council

• Company vehicle on site
• CPD and further study funded
• Retirement fund and medical aid
