Job Description

Behind every good plate at this casual dining restaurant in Cape Town CBD is a cook who preps properly, and that could be you. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

You'll be based at a casual dining restaurant in Cape Town CBD. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

What you'll actually do

  • Plate to the spec photo so every dish looks the same.
  • Clean down your section, deep-clean the fryer and scrub the extractor filters.
  • Prep veg, sauces, marinades and portions from the daily mise en place list.
  • Train the kitchen assistants on knife safety and prep standards.
  • Cook for banquets and conference lunches of 100 to 400 guests.
  • Label, date and rotate stock using first-in, first-out.
  • Help cost recipes and track waste on the weekly sheet.

What you need

  • You know food safety basics under R638 and HACCP
  • 1 to 3 years in a busy commercial kitchen
  • Good knife skills and you can prep at speed
  • A culinary certificate or City & Guilds, or solid on-the-job experience
  • Comfortable in heat, on your feet, for long split shifts

What's in it for you

  • Two staff meals per shift
  • Transport allowance for split and late shifts
  • Live-in accommodation at lodge postings
  • On-the-job training with a path to chef de partie

Applying, step by step

  1. Read the "What you need" list above. If you tick most of it, go ahead and apply.
  2. Keep copies of these ready to send: photos of dishes you have plated (on your phone is fine), certified copy of your SA ID or work permit plus a CV listing each kitchen, your station and dates.
  3. Fill in the short form below with your name and a phone number you actually answer.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 10 working days, usually by phone.
