Staff Nurse (Night Shift)

A private medical ward in Mbombela needs someone kind and reliable to look after patients who can't manage alone. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

This post is Mbombela-based, with most of your time spent at a private medical ward. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Keep the fluid and food intake charts accurate for every patient
• Take and chart temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood glucose
• Hand out oral medication under the supervision of a registered nurse
• Keep families updated on routine matters and pass clinical questions to the sister
• Follow infection control rules, including hand hygiene and safe sharps disposal
• Turn bed-bound patients on schedule and check pressure areas for early sores

• First aid Level 1 or BLS certificate
• Able to work shifts, including nights and weekends
• SANC enrolment as an Enrolled Nurse or Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary for nursing posts
• Patient and gentle with elderly, frail or confused people
• At least 1 year of hands-on patient care

• Experience in a frail care or hospice setting
• A second South African language spoken by the patients you'll serve
• Dementia care or palliative care short course

• Paid training in dementia and end-of-life care
• Overtime paid at time and a half
• Transport home after late shifts at some facilities

• Recruiters phone references for care jobs, so warn your references and check their numbers still work.
• If you're a caregiver, attach the certificate from the training provider, not just a letter saying you attended.
