Berry Picker (Tunnel Farm)

You'll pick, prune and look after crops on a deciduous fruit orchard near Stellenbosch through the season. If you turn up on time and finish what you start, you'll fit in quickly.

You'll be based at a deciduous fruit orchard in Stellenbosch. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Wash hands and use the field toilets for food safety
• Clean and store picking bags, ladders and secateurs
• Weed beds by hand or with a hoe
• Follow the re-entry times after spraying, as the signs show
• Prune and thin fruit trees and vines to the farm's method

• Careful with fruit, since bruised fruit is rejected
• Valid ID or work permit
• Able to work outdoors in heat, cold and rain
• Willing to start at sunrise
• Follows farm hygiene and safety rules

• Living on or near the farm
• Pruning experience on vines or fruit trees
• Previous harvest or picking experience

• Farm transport from nearby towns
• Piece-rate bonus on top of daily wage
• Seasonal accommodation on some farms

• Have your bank details ready. Most farms pay into a bank account and will not start you without it.
• Farms hire before the season starts, so apply four to six weeks early. Late arrivals often find the teams already full.
