Home-Based Caregiver (Live-In)

A hospice in-patient unit in Durban Central needs someone kind and reliable to look after patients who can't manage alone. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

You'll be based at a hospice in-patient unit in Durban Central. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Make beds, change linen and keep the rooms clean and uncluttered
• Keep families updated on routine matters and pass clinical questions to the sister
• Spot confusion, falls risk or changes in mood and tell the nurse in charge
• Do simple wound dressings and report anything that looks infected
• Hand out oral medication under the supervision of a registered nurse
• Follow infection control rules, including hand hygiene and safe sharps disposal

• At least 1 year of hands-on patient care
• Matric or NQF Level 4 equivalent
• Able to work shifts, including nights and weekends
• SANC enrolment as an Enrolled Nurse or Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary for nursing posts
• First aid Level 1 or BLS certificate

• Dementia care or palliative care short course
• A second South African language spoken by the patients you'll serve
• Code B or Code 8 driver's licence for home visits

• Uniform supplied
• Meals provided on shift at many frail care centres
• Transport home after late shifts at some facilities
• Paid training in dementia and end-of-life care

• Name the type of patients you've cared for, such as stroke patients or dementia residents, in your first CV line.
• Recruiters phone references for care jobs, so warn your references and check their numbers still work.
