Mechanical Fitter (Shutdowns)

Bearings, gearboxes, pumps and lathes: this sugar mill in Cape Town CBD needs your hands on them. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

Home base is a sugar mill on the Cape Town CBD side of Western Cape. Start is planned for the beginning of next month.

• Respond to breakdowns and get the line running again safely
• Align shafts with a laser alignment tool after every drive change
• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
• Follow the lockout procedure before any work on machinery
• Machine shafts, bushes and keyways on a lathe and milling machine

• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan in a factory or workshop
• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• You read engineering drawings and measure with micrometers and verniers
• Willing to work shifts, standby and weekend shutdowns

• CNC programming experience
• Millwright trade test, since it covers both mechanical and electrical

• Shift and standby allowances
• Tool allowance
• Paid overtime on shutdowns

• Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
