Mine Safety Officer (Underground)

The open-pit coal mine near eMalahleni needs someone who knows the MHSA inside out and can coach crews. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

Home base is an open-pit coal mine on the eMalahleni side of Mpumalanga.

• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Review baseline and issue-based risk assessments with section managers
• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current
• Take dust, noise and heat measurements with the occupational hygiene team
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Train safety representatives and support the health and safety committee

• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations
• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification

• Mine rescue training
• Diploma or degree in Safety Management or Environmental Health

• Retirement fund and medical aid
• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• Company vehicle on site

• Give numbers: how many investigations you led, or how the LTIFR changed in your section.
