Painter (New Builds & Refurbishments)

You'll build it with your hands: walls, floors, roofs and finishes on the school construction project in Sandton. If you turn up on time and finish what you start, you'll fit in quickly.

This post is Sandton-based, with most of your time spent at a school construction project. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

• Carry bricks and materials to the workface and keep the scaffold clear
• Lay face brick and plaster brick to line, level and plumb
• Clean your tools and sweep your work area before knocking off
• Build and strip formwork for columns, beams and slabs
• Mix mortar and plaster to the right ratio for the job
• Fix roof trusses, purlins and brandering for ceilings

• Able to follow a foreman's instructions and read basic measurements
• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Proven experience in at least one trade, shown by references or a practical test
• Physically strong enough for a full day of lifting and bending outside
• Willing to move between sites in the same city

• Trade test in bricklaying, carpentry or plastering
• Your own trowels, levels and tile cutter

• Transport from a pick-up point to site
• Chance to move up to a gang leader post
• PPE supplied: hard hat, gloves, reflective vest
• UIF and COIDA registration from day one

• Be ready to do a short practical test on site. Arrive early with your own tools if you have them.
• Say which trade you are strongest in first. "Bricklayer, 6 years, face brick" is better than "general construction".
