Painter's Assistant (Renovations)

Hard outdoor work on a school building project in Paarl, with a chance to learn a trade while you earn. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

You'll be based at a school building project in Paarl. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

• Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed
• Help offload deliveries of steel, timber and pipes
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks
• Set up barriers, cones and signs around open trenches
• Mix concrete and mortar by hand or with a small mixer
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Clear rubble and load it into skips

• Grade 8 or higher
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
• Prepared to travel between sites in the area
• Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan

• A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket
• Registered on your ward or municipal job-seeker database

• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site

• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
• List past sites by name and what you did there, like "mixed concrete, laid kerbs". It proves you have done real site work.
