Shutter Hand (Concrete Formwork)

The school construction project in Midrand needs skilled hands and helpers who know the basics of the building trade. If you like clear targets and knowing where you stand, this is for you.

You'll be based at a school construction project in Midrand. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

• Mix mortar and plaster to the right ratio for the job
• Tile floors, showers and splashbacks, including cutting around fittings
• Cut, bend and tie reinforcing steel to the bending schedule
• Lay face brick and plaster brick to line, level and plumb
• Wear your hard hat, boots and harness wherever the foreman says
• Prime and paint walls, ceilings and woodwork in two or three coats
• Clean your tools and sweep your work area before knocking off

• Willing to move between sites in the same city
• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Physically strong enough for a full day of lifting and bending outside
• Punctual every morning, even in winter
• Understands basic site safety like scaffolds and open trenches

• Your own trowels, levels and tile cutter
• Trade test in bricklaying, carpentry or plastering

• Weekly or fortnightly pay, always on time
• Transport from a pick-up point to site
• UIF and COIDA registration from day one
• Chance to move up to a gang leader post

• Be ready to do a short practical test on site. Arrive early with your own tools if you have them.
• Say which trade you are strongest in first. "Bricklayer, 6 years, face brick" is better than "general construction".
