Candidate Attorney (Labour Law) – Fixed-Term

You'll do your articles at a commercial law firm in Sandton and learn the practice from the ground up. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

You'll be based at a commercial law firm in Sandton. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

• Take instructions from clients and write clear attendance notes
• Attend court with counsel and take notes during trials
• Study for the LPC competency-based examinations alongside the work
• Prepare affidavits and notices of motion for your principal to review
• Prepare trial bundles and discovery affidavits
• Keep matter files updated and diarise court dates and deadlines

• LLB degree from a South African university
• Clear criminal record, as required for admission
• Good legal research and clear written English
• Willing to work late before trials and filing deadlines
• Ready to sign a practical vocational training contract registered with the LPC

• Completed PLT (Practical Legal Training) at a law school
• Second official language used by the firm's clients
• Moot court or legal clinic experience

• Study leave for board exams
• Paid PLT course fees at some firms
• Mentorship from an experienced principal
• Travel allowance for court runs

• Attach a short legal writing sample; firms judge candidates heavily on drafting.
• Say which area of law you want and why in two lines; generic cover letters rarely get shortlisted.
